Teaching Program
Seneca Lakes Family Medicine Residency Program in Seneca, SC is a community based 1+2 rural training program in family medicine. Our vision is to become a model rural training track, recognized as an exemplary site at which to prepare for a career in rural family practice.
Two second-year and two third-year residents are trained in Seneca after completing internship at Anderson Area Medical center. Oconee Medical Center is the site of inpatient training while the outpatient experience is at Seneca Medical Associates located 0.3 miles from the hospital.
Curriculum
The outpatient experience at Seneca Lakes is rare in that the residency operates within a viable private practice which is not hospital owned. The resident learns the "essence of family medicine" by seeing his/her own ambulatory care patients and discussing their medical care with a faculty preceptor. In the rural practice, this experience is of primary importance.
In addition to his/her family medicine center patients, other hospitalized and service patients will be the resident's responsibility. Center hours may vary depending on the assigned rotation.
Most of the intern year rotations are done at the tertiary care center in Anderson to take advantage of the higher volume of high complexity inpatient cases available there. NICU will be done at GHS by all interns. All 2nd and 3rd year rotations are done in Seneca, with the exception of "away" electives you may choose.
